Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
Shout-out to all those that for one reason or another had no father or even a father figure. I know today is a yearly reminder of what we didn’t have.
💚 right here with you. I’m glad that over the years, the very unreasonable pestering from other people to try and reconnect to my father (who still pretends that he did nothing wrong), as some kind of show of womanly magnanimity and spiritual development to prove myself worthy, has faded away.
As Britney would say to them “Mind your B”
Uggh, I hate those ‘but faaaamily’ types.
I feel that. I let go of the guilt a long time ago. In my culture the son is supposed to look after their parents in their old ages.
Mum passed away when I was in high school and I haven’t seen the old man since.
And am grateful I haven’t. It wouldn’t be good for either of us.

Nice…
You’re nice
I’m starting to distrust my ability to detect AI-generated imagery
Oh Gawd Cennalink strikes again. Just got a text to day that I have an appointment with a DES agency tomorrow for an interview re: getting work.
Fortunately I’m able to go and quite willing to discuss strategies so I can hit the ground running when I am fit to start working, but isn’t it fucking typical?Geez they don’t give you much time!
Plus I’ve got a medical certificate until the 21st. facepalm. From experience I suspect wires have been crossed somewhere.
They keep delaying the processing of my application but I was still supposed to earn 100 points for no health care card and no money. I didn’t do it. It’s almost a month late now.
It’s Father’s Day! I work at an outdoor venue and we predict it’ll be chockers…
Pity the poor Bunnings staff - and if you have to go there, make their life a bit easier if you conveniently can.
Folks it’s my last Sunday night for a long time before I have to work on Monday. Wish me luck in clearing out the remaining tasks over the last 3 days. Starting a bit early tonight to get ahead of one task (need to concentrate and get the code right), before I focus on the next big thing tomorrow that will require much more strategic thinking
E: good old brain. Flails around subconsciously for days and then when I finally sit down in the right frame of mind, the solution comes to me in a brilliant stroke and a relatively simple SQL query pulls everything together. Fuck yeah SQL saving me from doing this shit the hard way, or god forbid, having to learn an actual programming language
E2: glory hallelujah what I thought would take 4 hours took 40 minutes and nothing complicated at all.
🤞🏻
Your good luck seems to have worked at least for tonight 🙏
Just quietly… I think I want to be out of Victoria by next winter. I need a break. Either a permanent move interstate, or move all my stuff into storage and go travel for 3 months. I could go to the US and travel with/stay with my brother on the cheap. Finally go on a road trip now that I’ve got my licence and enough driving experience/confidence.
Maybe do some state hopping, you might find somewhere you really enjoy.
I’ve lived in Perth and Brisbane before and wouldn’t mind going back for a stint depending on work and cost of living. Helps that I have closer family in both places but not in melbs
I’m from Brisbane, and I’d maybe go back if I could get something on the far north coast, something between Yeppoon and Mackay. I’d honestly go way further, but then you run into crocs and the beach becomes a bit pointless, and you start having to actually deal with wet/dry seasons.
Oof yeah having grown up in the proper tropics overseas, as much as Melbourne winters can be a bit depresso I also don’t ever want to go back to proper tropical humidity. Plus as a brown chick I have accepted that my chances of having a good social life and feeling safe are lower outside of major metropolitan areas or hippy towns. I think the Sunny Coast is as far north as I’d like to go.
Yeah, fair call! As someone who’s spent a lot of time in rural FNQ (Grandparents own a very large cattle farm, and many other members own farms as well), I hate to admit it, but a lot of folks (young and old) still have some very old world views and values. I’ll never forget my Grandparent’s reaction to my sister dating and eventually bringing home a lovely Filipino lad, they did all but clutch their pearls and hide the silverware.
I kind of get it. Vic is not in the best shape at the moment.
Two quarrelling wattle birds have just crashed into my front window. Beak first. If they had any brains to begin with, those brains are now mashed potato. Which explains a bit about wattle birds.
Yikes, that sounds pretty horrible. Did neither of them make it?
One is dead. The other was dazed and confused for a bit, but then wobbled away. Don’t like its chances. Nature’s way can be pretty horrible.
Well the sleep-in gods denied me the zzzs this morning, so finished some laundry and drank all the required Hydralite. I’m washed and dressed and awaiting company to revel in this sunshine.
Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing (haha, no Marx for you) I hope you’re having a good day. Be in the moment and if you’re having a bit of one, remember this too shall pass.
Melbourne road today:
In the Melbourne CBD, on Lonsdale St with the 90º median parking. Two people on opposite sides pulled halfway into a spot, blocking a lane in each direction, including some cops in a marked car.
Lights come on and three cops got out of the car, the driver was like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ arms up high and kicked them both out of the parking spot, then went about their day moments later.
The car that was in front of me / behind the cops then promptly took that spot.
🤣
The birds have been hard at work cracking snails on my roof this morning, and while I’m awake and working anyway it’s in its 3rd hour and beginning to get a little annoying.
I think you’ve solved the mystery of the noises I’ve been hearing on the roof! Couldn’t work out how the birds were making so much noise with their soft little feet
I find they get right into it on sunny mornings, lots of tap tap tapping.
Be careful because they may have read the story of Aeschylus, an ancient greek playwright who was killed by a falling turtle that had been dropped by an Eagle who had confused Aeschylus’s shiny, bald head for a rock. This is apparently a true historical account and golden eagles in greece do kill turtles by dropping them onto rocks.
Not even a little embarrassed to say I only know this story because I saw it on Horrible Histories.
Never be embarrassed about the source of knowledge as long as the information is trustworthy.
Horrible Histories is a legendary show, very popular in my house. Some of the songs are classics! I especially like this one about Dick Turpin.
Oh man, check out stand and deliver
“Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin’s Day will shine upon the key-hole.” 😨😨😨
Oh shit, shit’s about to get real.
Sooner or later they will run out of snails. Have hope.
Another beautiful sunny day. :) I’ll just water a few of the plants then go out to buy some materials to make masks.
Just up in my hotel room getting stuck into some mounds. Any day which doesn’t start or end with a face full of mounds is a day wasted.
Could not agree more.
Stop deleting shit people. It fucks shit up.
But can I delete shit people?
I don’t think you can but you can ignore them. I just read my post again. I guess I could’ve worded it better.
Going to write stern but fairly worded letter to Geelong council about a very bright street light they’ve installed. Honestly 3 x the lumens of a normal street light and it’s on a road that has next to zero (0) traffic.
It is also next to an area has a heap of active frogs (when weather permits). Insects are going to head towards the light.
It will go a little something like this:
"Oi g-town cunts dim your shitty light,
regards
Bottom racer".
I intend to do this before the pobblebonk awakens. They need food.
There needs to be laws against toxic lighting. Not just for street lights but also public buildings and apartment buildings.
Fully agree.
There was a movement a while ago trying to get buildings and advertising etc. to shield lights and point them down towards the ground but it fell on deaf ears.
I truly believe shitty lighting is contributing to insect decline (and all that rely on them).
Oh your comment reminded me, I went past that new joint on Kew Junction. Jesus but that electronic billboard facing Studley Park Road is eye searingly bright. I hope the building across the road isn’t occupied, it’s like a bloody floodlight
You might need a map to point out the problem light. Preferably a hand drawn one with a big red circle and arrows.
“24 8x10 coloured photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was” May you have more luck than Officer Obie.
Thanks for drawing my attention to this!
