Gboard was never really good at picking up strokes. Honestly, nothing ever managed to come close to the accuracy of Swype & Dragon, which is why I’m still using it even 5 years after being discontinued. You can get the apk easily, but unfortunately it won’t survive much longer when google enforces a new API version on Android.
Though I’ve heard of modded versions that should still work… Here’s to hoping. That app has been with me for 14 years.

Did you check if it’s defederated? Would be the first thing I do, that instance is a bit controversial.
In a browser, go to yourinstance.com/instances and navigate to “blocked instances” on the top.
Second thing to try is just link it here in the comments, with a leading !, such as !germany@lemmy.org - you should be able to follow the link in app and then subscribe from there.
Lastly, if it’s a very new community, it’s just a waiting game until your instance has synced up.

Are you connected to some VPN? I had this when I connected to some mainstream servers, and was able to log in just fine when I switched to something less common, without changing any security/privacy features.
You don’t, that’s a feature they didn’t open up for API use, so no app supports it. Go through the mobile website of your instance instead.
