    Looks like they updated the article:

    To get why this could be a problem for some YouTube Vanced successors, we need to understand how they work. Some of these apps are essentially tweaked and modded browsers that display videos via a WebView of the YouTube website

    I still don’t know which of these apps they are talking about…

      I don’t know any apps that work like that. I’m pretty sure even the YouTube is just an app
