I don’t think Trump is the first to run for president after being voted out.
Not running for a lesser office is way more the “unwritten rule”.

Grover Cleveland did just that, he’s the only US President to serve two nonconsecutive terms.

The ideal president in American culture does what George Washington did, serve two terms then retire. Being a one term president is seen as a failure and a rejection of their policies, so relection is unlikely
