I have ~100 users downloaded ~1000 of my files in the last week alone. Music piracy is still alive and kicking. I encourage everyone to download and install SoulseekQT/Nicotine+/Seeker-Android and share whatever kind of music you have for everybody to download. Let’s bring back music piracy!
“to anyone who thinks music piracy is dead:” “Let’s bring back music piracy” 😂
Okay, my bad I guess… Music piracy isn’t DEAD, but it’s not as strong as it used to be, hence the post.
Likely for particular reason: streaming. Most music is easily accessible for a pretty nominal price these days, and often comes with features like Spotify’s Discover, which suggest new songs/artists that you might like given what you already listen to. You can’t do that with a cd or vinyl. You have to purchase the whole album even if there’s only one song on it you’d like listen to.
Piracy is often a response to media being overpriced or inaccessible. Streaming services essentially solve both those issues with a reasonable monthly price for unlimited access and large libraries of high quality music.
Correct.
Music streaming essentially “solved” the “issue” of music piracy. Although it never solved the greedy corporations which were and still are stealing and living high off the creators (they always shift blame to pirates or now streaming. It’s never THEIR fault of course.)
Unfortunately the movie/TV business missed the cue on this one and thinks charging like $50 for a super ultra suck your dick bluray is gonna sell when piracy is always an option. If there was a few big libraries of movies/TV with literally every single movie and show available the day of release and forever after that for some price, I dunno what exactly, with no addon nickel and dime bullshit, I might consider not downloading everything from dodgy sites. But that day came as close as it ever will probably and then moved on to the modern times where Paramount and Discovery think anyone is gonna pay for that shit non-bundled.
Was anyone saying it was dead? I guess it took a hit when What went down, but I don’t think people are going to stop listening to music…
This is a good reminder I should get back on soulseek, though; I used to use it and it was pretty great.
They meant more that due to the relatively cheap & easy to use stream subscriptions most people don’t pirate music. Of course they will be people still doing it.
Similar to Netflix at the beginning… Then it got more expensive and multiple streaming providers appeared and everything got splitted into different platforms etc…and that’s was it, back to piracy for a lot of people.
Exactly. We’ve seen piracy go down fairly consistently with the rise of Netflix, as it was providing good service and a huge catalogue for a pretty fair price. But piracy started picking back up when every major production company decided to do their own thing, and getting the content you wanted is, again, prohibitively expensive.
Spotify is more convenient than piracy, so I’m happy to use it as long as I feel the price is fair for the value I’m getting out of it.
Netflix, Disney+, HBO and whatever else there is? Not nearly as convenient as radarr/sonarr + jellyfin. I was fine with giving Netflix my money a few years ago when the price was fair and the catalogue was huge. But at this point, a seedbox can be had for cheaper than a basic subscription to any of the TV/movie streaming services. So fuck em.
It’s awesome
Get on it my friend!
Piracy is a service problem, I’m not necessarily doing it for ideological purposes. The music industry, for the most part, has got that. The TV and movie industry, however, is just learning it now, again.
If I can get the content I want conveniently and for a fair price, I have no issues with paying. It’s not like I don’t have other options. I’ve been on what before it got shut down, and I’ve been on red ever since. But apart from the obscure stuff that I can’t get on Spotify, I rarely use it.
Agree with you, The convenience and relativy cheap of finding music beats the needs of piracy. I still sometimes soulseeking when i dont find album on spotify.
Movie and TV industry can never match the price of the music industry though. TV and movies are just way more of a production and feat. People want to go back to the days of Netflix having all the content for $10/month but that’s not realistic. Some of the streaming services will die, but we’ll still be left with a few and they won’t be cheap.
Does anyone remember Audiogalaxy?
its really fast too
Slsk is one of the last bastions of freedom, I do it with religious zell for more than a decade, and my faith keeps getting stronger. Sometimes even tip hats gets few bucks :)
