Ideally something covering at least the time leading up to the revolution up until now. I’m skeptical of Western accounts, and I’m having trouble finding leftist reviews of books like “The Search for Modern China” to show that they’re not full of propaganda.
Any suggestions?
I’d recommend Mao: The Real Story by Pantsov. the author’s a Russian historian, maybe a bit of a lib, but it doesn’t come out too much. don’t be too dissuaded from it being a biography as opposed to a general history. it doesn’t focus entirely on Mao, and a lot of the book is just describing China before the revolution, during the revolution, after the revolution up to Mao’s death. it also draws heavily on Soviet archives, so you get a lot of insight as to what was going on with the USSR leading up to the split.
I picked this up, might go with Mao’s China and After for now but definitely looks like it’s worth reading. Thanks comrade!
let me know what you think of it
There is some modern history here: https://en.prolewiki.org/wiki/People's_Republic_of_China#Semi-colonial_and_semi-feudal_society_(1840–1949)
I’m also writing a page for anything before the revolution: https://en.prolewiki.org/wiki/History_of_China but I’ve been slacking and it’s nowhere near finished. Around a quarter to a third

While it focuses on the market reform debates, it has some really interesting historical information about economics in China before, during, and after the revolution.
