Yeah, it’s a uniquely fucked up situation that in 99.9% of cases apps can only send a notification through Google’s or apple’s servers and there’s no alternative available like using UnifiedPush or annihilating battery life.
At least Android has options, but like you pointed out, they aren’t very viable. Companies like Apple and Google can shrug off the criticism, say that they are just “providing the option,” and blame third parties for passing too much data, not encrypting it end to end, etc.
These are PRISM companies we’re talking about here. They haven’t even apologized for that.
