You said insensitive to touch, but pain is separate from touch and smell.
You could also feed them ghost peppers to communicate, use ambient temperature as a signal, or cut onions in front of their eyes in a specific pattern.
If we are using ghost peppers to figure out a way to communicate, we can probably save some time and just interpret whatever response they give as “please kill me, you sadistic assholes” and land pretty close
