Gauging interest post. Do any of you fabulous folk want to help start a cutting swap community? Always loved them on reddit. Half of my collection is from those fine folks! :)
I’d be down🤗
although I’m not sure how I’d swap as most of my plants are root-based cuttings😅https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/how-propagate-houseplants-division-and-offsets
I stick them in old take out containers with wet paper towel.
Hmm, that’s pretty smart! I suppose shipping priority mail would have it stay wet for long enough, then?
Yep, they’ll survive if it can arrive in less than a week.
yooooo
if that works that’s pretty swag👌
Made the community. Go make a dummy post there so I can mod you. You may have to index the community on your server.
done!
Root cuttings can be safely mailed, it just takes a little set up. And a mindful eye on the weekly forecast
I’ll probably ask for some help on the community🤗 once my exams are finished in December🥲
And a mindful eye on the weekly forecast
with the climate I’m in, I’ll def have to check the weather before sending plants👌
Hand warmer packets for cold work! I get some cuttings from a girl who includes them in winter.
How does it work? Do the cuttings survive in the mail, or is it a local thing?
I’ve been lurking here to learn more lol
If it’s a new community, could it include other types of exchanges? Seeds for example, I’ve seen some things like that locally with seed libraries and neighborhood groups
Generally, it should be local to the country at least and weather and time need to be minded. Seeds are included! Check out these for examples:
Cool! I’d love to see those here :)
For regional ones, you could make/promote them on the regional instances. This could also be great to promote on other fediverse platforms
One major one is good until it gets steam, I think. People can put the country in the title.
I like it :)
why not use this community? just add tags to the title:
[Plant Swap] [Australia] giving away beginner friendly Hoya carnosa / porcelainflower / wax plant
you can still learn about the plant and have general discussions in the comments? why split the community? It’s more like propagating! :) It’s a bit easier to manage communities when you have different containers for different modes as people barely look at sidebars and stickies as is… There I can make it really obvious how these posts should be formatted and not everyone will want to see trades. I was planning on having tags like that, yes! :) it makes it a system and less cluttered with clear places for reviews, etc. Makes it easier for bot setup too, like in plantid. Going to set up a formatting reminder.
Otter if you want on the team go make a post. :)
Thank you! Just made a comment in one of the posts :)
Done
Thanks!
What a great idea!
