I had someone say this to me in real life. I explained UBI was a libertarian thing, Milton Friedman had a flavour of it (think it was Negative Income Tax) and how if implemented in say the US or UK it would work to absolve the state of any further responsibility and the other sorts of obvious problems it entails. They had never considered that it might not be a good solution I think because only people right of them would argue against them. I quickly changed the topic but they were a bit off for the rest of our time together (not too long, like 15 mins).
