Apple has a monopoly in its own little region within tech, just like there are no “monopoly” ISPs but within a geographical region there is.
Once you have sunk money into the Apple ecosystem, the only way to continue using it is to continue sinking money into Apple approved things. Apple keeps out people without the money to pay their developer fees (and even then, is antagonistic to open source projects like the first iOS Tor browser, FlickType, and Ice Cubes).
Apple isn’t really a major competitor when android has 80% of the market.

It has most of the paying customers/revenue though.
I don’t know what the numbers are in that regard but that’s quite possible.
