General libbery aside, I just wanted to comment on the whole “needed at the time” bit. Because I’ve been hearing it often these couple of years. In context of Ukraine (and supporting open nazis), in context of Afghanistan (supporting muhajadeen against USSR), in context of supporting original nazis after the war. It is quite often “well yeah, they were/are not good people, but were needed at the time”.

But never, NEVER is this argument applied to USSR. Or any communist organisation.
