Cool. Let’s break them both down and replace them with a thousand smaller, employee owned, and ethical companies.

Fragmenration is not preferred by most users and many of the services and systems these two run require large international teams. That’s not to say that they don’t need to be checked by antitrust.

What would the world look like if we fragmented the tech giants but then regulated them by requiring open standards so that things could mix and match as customers see fit?

I am not saying that it couldn’t be split but a thousand companies doesn’t sound a good idea. Some of the stuff they do cannot be done at that size I would suspect.

It is pretty arbitrary as others have said.

But tbh, never understood why Apple is so highly valuable in the first place. Consumers are stupid.

iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, AirTags. None of those products were the first, just the first competent product that offers good usability in a sea of otherwise mediocre options.

As long as electronics makers keep sleeping at the wheel Apple will be able to capitalize on creating things people actually want to use.

The Vision Pro will be the next test. If it fails, and the follow up doesn’t sell, Apple will face a rude awakening and their stock value will drop. If they can’t succeed in the category after that, it will tank.

Why is Tesla so valuable? They sell way less cars then the old boys.

Yeah but how do you wade through the fields of bullshit to find a decent PC laptop? PC manufacturers have like 200 SKUs.

Like I go to dell.com, what’s the best option? Inspiron? Precision? Latitude? Vostro? Which of those lines is “premium”? And each of those lines has like 4 models each. And that’s just one manufacturer.

But ultimately you buy one of those machines, bring it home, boot up windows and get served ads in the fucking start menu.

Meanwhile I bought the lamest laptop in Apple’s lineup for my daughter, and the thing is solid aluminum with a great display, huge trackpad, great battery and lightning fast processor.

          But then Windows sucks ass.

Also, every other OEM in the world makes hardware as good as Apple? No. Maybe some, but definitely not even most.

Don’t you all have a business or economics community to post this?

If I subscribe to technology, I want tech news. Not how this month one tech giant is valued slightly higher than another.

Hold up guys! It’s just a big misunderstanding! The Tesla parked at the Redmond parking lot is actually Bertha’s. She doesn’t work at Microsoft. She works for Uber.

Again sorry, bad evaluation… apple can have it’s Crown back for another 10 seconds… okay now! This time Microsoft really is the…no wait! The homeless guy! The hobo just picked up the nickel! One more microsecond… okay now Microsoft is the clear winner by a single microwave oven!

Oh no! Fred! He’s about to cook his fish dish again! Someone stop him!

Over the past year, Microsoft’s support for artificial intelligence tools by backing OpenAI has helped boost its value

…which I’m sure is not just hype and grift obscuring a heap of pending lawsuits.
