Always amazed me how people just accept that here is a class below ‘middle’ that’s living in poverty and is barely hanging on. Why do you allow yourself to accept other PEOPLE living in shit conditions?

“Because I’ve already got my own issues solved so screw the rest!” It is so easy for people to become complacent with being “middle class” and forget the decades of struggle (past and present) that their fellow workers face. Thet just blindly accept that a certain percentage of the population must always live in desperate poverty and that’s just the way it is.

And a big part of it is believing that if everyone works as hard as they did, they’d be middle class, too. Sometimes, it’s less complacency and more a deep seated belief that everyone else deserves living in poverty because they’re lazy and wasteful.

Never worked harder in my life than when I was working at a company that supplied bars and restaurants with drinks. It was 60-70 hours a week of lifting heavy shit like kegs. Pay was shit, but because I worked that much hours I earned a lot in the end.

After that I got an office job and the amount of trash talk was insane. ‘Yeah, if people earning minimum wage would make the same as I do, I’d do their job. It’s far more easier!’ Like, fuck me I’d love t see your slouched office body carry 60kg kegs all day, see how you’d like it. And why would you care if other people, who may or may not be doing easier work, earn more money? If you think that’s unfair, fight for better working conditions yourself.

One of the greatest propaganda tricks ever invented is to get one group of workers to shit all over another group rather than fight for their own improved conditions. You see it every time there’s a strike: “Why should they get a pay rise, I haven’t had one for ten years.” Neither have they; that’s why they’re on strike! It was the same ‘after’ Covid: “Why should they get to work from home when I could do my job from home but my boss makes me commute?” Err…

What’s wrong with the suicide rate? It seems about average in the grand scheme of things, and significantly less then hellholes like the Japan or Korea. Further it’s had a 4% decline in the past 20 years.

Always heard that depression / suicide rates were because of the very long nights in winter. Obviously it must play a role but come on, it can’t be just that

You’re not wrong, but lets not downplay the gulf oil-monarchies. Everything you say is true but comparing it to Norway really doesn’t put it into perspective. The number of migrant workers in the gulf countries is so massive it dwarfs the local population 10 to 1, and there is no path to permanent residency or citizenship. Meaning 80% of the population will toil away with no rights guaranteed by the government whatsoever until they become too old or unable to work, after which they are deported back to their country of origin. I’m not defending Norway, but they are not on the same level by miles.
