    Can a UK resident answer this: Why does the UK care about fossil fuels other than their utility? As far as I know it isn’t a major portion of your economy.

      Shell and BP are both British companies. Not a UK resident thou, but that is my best guess.

        As another comment mentioned, Shell is actually Dutch, though BP is British

        However the banking industry is an enormous part of Britain’s economic, is highly influential in British politics, and has massive investments in fossil fuel companies internationally.

        It’s also been a valuable wedge issue for the Conservative party to use for the last decade or so, which has had a big impact on the tone of discussion
